Right to Plain Language: From the duty of clarity to the right to understand
Student Profile
The program is aimed at university students interested in law, legal communication and the relationship between language, institutions and citizens. It is particularly suitable for students who wish to understand the importance of clarity in legislation, public administration, justice and legal relations, while developing tools to make legal language more accessible and understandable.
Why this program?
Clear language has become essential to ensuring that citizens, consumers and users can understand the rules, decisions and legal documents that affect them. This program explores clarity from both a legal and practical perspective, covering areas such as legislation, public administration, justice, contracts, data protection and artificial intelligence. The course is offered in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Academy.
Program Objectives
Analyse legislative clarity and its application in legislation, public administration and justice.
Become familiar with key instruments and standards relating to clear and accessible language.
Analyse transparency and clarity in contracts, data protection and automated decision-making.
Explore the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence in the simplification of legal texts.
Apply plain-language techniques through the practical reformulation of legal documents.
Methodology
A comprehensive, modern education aligned with the professional world
The program combines academic sessions with workshops and practical activities designed to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the course. Students will analyse legal documents, work on cases related to legal and regulatory clarity, and participate in a reformulation clinic where they will identify comprehension issues, produce clearer versions of legal texts and assess their equivalence with the original documents. The program also includes comparative sessions and activities linked to the Real Academia Española.
Weekly Program
The first week explores the legal foundations of plain language, from legal certainty and legislative clarity to its application in public administration and justice. Students will examine legislative drafting, communication with citizens, cognitive accessibility and easy-to-read communication, as well as different plain-language initiatives in Spain, Mexico and Latin America.
The second week focuses on clarity in legal and economic relations, including consumer contracts, data protection and automated decision-making. Students will also explore key standards and reference works on plain language, legal design and the use of artificial intelligence to simplify legal texts. The program concludes with a practical reformulation clinic and an examination of clear communication in public information and oral legal proceedings.
