Miguel Almunia named independent member of the State Agency for the Evaluation of Public Policies

Miguel Almunia, Director of the Department of Economics and Full Professor at CUNEF Universidad, has been appointed to the Governing Council of the State Agency for the Evaluation of Public Policies (AEEPP).

In this capacity, he joins the governing body of the AEEPP as an independent expert. The Agency is tasked with driving the rigorous evaluation of public policies while enhancing transparency and accountability within the Public Administration.

The AEEPP is led by Director María Milagros Paniagua San Martín. Its collegiate governing body, the Governing Council, is chaired by Carlos Cuerpo, First Vice-President and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, and composed of the Secretary of State for the Economy, Israel Arroyo, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry for Digital Transformation, Banco de España, AIReF, CSIC and INE, as well as two fellow independent experts: Manuel Arellano (CEMFI) and Laura Hospido (Banco de España).

As an independent expert, Miguel Almunia will participate in the Agency's strategic guidance and oversight, leveraging his academic and technical experience to enhance public policy analysis.

The rigorous evaluation of public policies, grounded in empirical evidence, is essential to refining policy design and ensuring accountability to society. I look forward to using my research expertise to contribute to this goal,” Almunia remarked.

Public policy analysis

The State Agency for the Evaluation of Public Policies was established to promote common evaluation methodologies, providing evidence-based insights for decision making and fostering the continuous improvement of public policy. 

The Agency, created to succeed the former Institute for the Evaluation of Public Policies, serves as an independent vehicle for the modernisation of the Public Administration, promoting technical rigour and accountability in public policy analysis.

The AEEPP is empowered to conduct policy evaluations and provide technical assistance to government bodies and departments, aimed at enhancing the quality of the design, implementation and monitoring of public action.
