CUNEF Universidad’s Almansa Campus achieves the highest AIS accessibility rating

CUNEF Universidad’s Almansa Campus, located in Madrid, has been certified with 5 stars— the highest possible rating—by AIS (Accessibility Indicator System), thus becoming the world’s first private university campus to be awarded this prestigious certification. This achievement underscores CUNEF Universidad’s commitment to creating a fully accessible educational environment that matches its academic excellence.

The certificate was officially presented by Esther Bienes Pinedo, President of the ARS Foundation and creator of the AIS certification system, to Ana Isabel Fernández, Rector of CUNEF Universidad, in a formal ceremony that took place at the campus.

Ana Isabel Fernández expressed her gratitude for the recognition, highlighting that “our priority is to ensure that everyone connected to the campus, especially our students, enjoys the finest environment to develop their talent. At CUNEF Universidad, we are not just shaping the leaders of the future; we are dedicated to building a fairer and more equitable society, starting with our own campus”. 

For her part, Esther Bienes Pinedo highlighted CUNEF’s commitment to accessibility, pointing out that “accessible education is essential to ensuring an inclusive society for everyone”.

Key features of a maximum-rating certification

To achieve this certification, the university underwent a thorough audit based on AIS Standard 1/2023. Over 1,500 control points were assessed across the four campus buildings, with a detailed analysis of key areas like physical pathways, service usability, inclusive communication and evacuation protocols.

Previously, the university had implemented several key upgrades, including classrooms with haptic signage and accessible desks, adjustable whiteboards with auxiliary screens, and accessible counters equipped with hearing loops in the library and other campus spaces.

Furthermore, the synergy with the Churruca Business Park, where the campus is located, provided a solid foundation for accessibility in outdoor areas, which were already AIS-certified.

With this recognition, CUNEF Universidad solidifies its position as a leader in excellence and accessibility within the higher education sector, paving the way towards a more equitable future.
