Miguel Almunia, a professor at CUNEF Universidad, wins the “Julián Marías” Award for researchers under 40

Miguel Almunia, Titular Professor of Economics at CUNEF Universidad, has been awarded the 2022 Julián Marías Award for researchers under 40 years of age.  The award, granted by the Regional Government of of Madrid, recognises Almunia’s research in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences, focused on the effect that public policies have on the behaviour of companies and families.  The Julián Marías Research Awards distinguish the research activity and the scientific and humanistic values shown by researchers from the Region of Madrid, and aim to promote the emergence of vocations in the field of Research.

Born in Madrid in 1983, Miguel Almunia is a Titular Professor of Economics at CUNEF Universidad, with a Ramón y Cajal research contract. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley (2013), a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School (2008) and a BA in Economics from the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid (2005). Prior to joining CUNEF Universidad, he was a Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick.

For Miguel Almunia, “it is an honour to have received this award” which “is a stimulus to continue working on the analysis of the economic effects of public policies, a crucial issue to improve the quality of public debate”. The professor highlights how “proud” he is of having built a career in research in the Region of Madrid and stresses that research in the field of Social Sciences “is a team effort”. This is why Miguel Almunia also thanks his co-authors, research assistants and colleagues, whose contributions have been “essential” to developing his research agenda.

Miguel Almunia’s work has been published in some of the highest impact international economics journals, such as American Economic  Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and Journal   of Public Economics. Additionally, his articles have more than 1,200 citations, according to Google Scholar, and were recognised with the IIPF (International Institute of Public Finance) Young Economists Award in 2015, and nominated for the Vanguard of Science Award in 2019.
