CUNEF Universidad’s School of Engineering analyses digital sovereignty and data governance

24 March 2026

CUNEF Universidad’s School of Engineering recently hosted “IndraMind: in search of digital sovereignty”, a conference by digital strategy and data sovereignty specialist Tomás Ciudad Sobrino, who addressed one of today’s defining strategic challenges: data governance and control within a hyper-competitive global landscape.

During his lecture, Ciudad Sobrino highlighted how information has become a critical asset for businesses and nations alike, serving as a decisive factor for autonomy, economic competitiveness and national security. His analysis focused on the pivotal role of data in digital transformation and the urgent need to build domestic capabilities in a landscape dominated by global tech giants.

Technological independence

Current Head of Data at IndraMind, the speaker shared his expertise in addressing the challenges that governments and organisations face in ensuring their technological independence. In this regard, he offered a clear and structured vision on key issues like data governance, digital infrastructures and technological sovereignty.

The conference centred on national data sovereignty as one of the foremost challenges of the 21st century. Ciudad Sobrino pointed out that the way countries control, store and process information directly influences their political autonomy, as well as their ability to compete in a globalised economic landscape marked by geopolitical tensions.

He also discussed the role of regulation, technological dependence and the growing concentration of power in the hands of tech giants, stressing the importance of moving towards models that strengthen digital sovereignty without hampering innovation or international cooperation.

The session generated considerable interest among attendees. This vital space for analysis and debate on the future of digital sovereignty in Europe and the world strengthens the commitment of CUNEF Universidad’s School of Engineering with an educational model that addresses the great technological and strategic challenges of our time.
