The School of Engineering organises a conference on value creation in data spaces

April 28, 2025

Carlos Alonso Peña, director de División en la Dirección General del Dato

Last Monday, 28 April, over 40 students from the School of Engineering attended the conference “Leveraging data sharing spaces to create value”, by Carlos Alonso Peña, Division Director in the General Directorate of Data, under the Secretary of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence. During the session, held at Pirineos Campus, he highlighted some key insights:

  • The rules that have recently been issued by the European Union are materializing in the creation of data spaces, especially sectoral spaces, aimed at promoting collaboration and the exchange of information for different purposes.
  • The European Data Strategy, approved by the European Commission in 2020, aims to lead the creation of a data-driven society.
  • European standards have shifted their focus from personal data privacy, as set out in the 2016 General Data Protection Regulation, to data sharing in common spaces in the European Data Strategy.
  • Both the European Commission and the Spanish Government have begun to finance projects for the creation of large data spaces.
  • In Spain, the National Health Data Space is a relevant example: designed to promote research and the reuse of health data, on issues such as the prevalence of antibiotic use or sudden exacerbation in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
  • Public administrations require a large number of IT managers and technicians to build these data spaces, which represents an attractive employment option for graduates.
