The seminar series “Thursday Law at CUNEF Universidad” launches the AY with a session on the crisis of meritocracy

18 September 2025

Last Thursday, 18 September, the Auditorium of the Almansa Campus hosted a new session of “Thursday Law at CUNEF Universidad”, a seminar series on current legal topics. “The crisis of meritocracy”, the first session this academic year, focused on the importance of this system for both public administrations and private companies.

The session, which featured guest speakers Vicente Montes, State Economist and Trade Expert, María Rubio, judge and Spokesperson for the Francisco de Vitoria Legal Association, and Raquel Arenal, Head of Talent at Mapfre Spain, was chaired by Andrés Betancor, Director of the Department of Law at CUNEF Universidad.

The speakers highlighted the following key ideas:

  • The current meritocratic model is one of the few effective tools in the hands of  citizens to ensure that public policies are applied.
  • An independent and professional judiciary must guarantee the rule of law.
  • Access to civil service has to be as efficient and inclusive as possible, with more agile processes, fixed dates, scholarships for socio‐economically disadvantaged students and more resources for selection panels.
  • Selection processes should go beyond measuring knowledge, to include soft skills assessments or roleplaying.
  • Ongoing training and skills development are essential to ensure professional mobility and growth during the working stage.

Next 9 October, the University will welcome guest speakers Jesús Remón, Senior Partner and President of Uría Menéndez, Eduardo García, Managing Partner at Clifford Chance, and Joaquín Jiménez Rubio, Managing Partner at Ayuela Jiménez, for the next session of “Thursday Law at CUNEF Universidad”, which will focus on the transformation of law firms.
