Students from the School of Engineering participate in SWERC 2025
24 November 2025
This Monday, 24 November, CUNEF Universidad took part in the Southwestern Europe Regional Contest (SWERC), an initiative within the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) aimed specifically at students from Southwestern Europe. More than 50,000 university students worldwide participate in ICPC every year. CUNEF Universidad’s School of Engineering was represented by two student teams in this year’s edition of SWERC, which challenged contestants with more complex problems than ever before. One of CUNEF Universidad’s teams finished 12th in Spain and 4th in the Region of Madrid.
SWERC requires teams to solve 12 or 13 discrete and algorithmic math problems in five hours. Each team, made up of three contestants, can use only one computer, so cooperation and task division are extremely important. Tech companies like Google, Huawei or Jane Street, which are all ICPC sponsors, especially value the ability to solve the type of problems included in these competitions in their recruitment processes.
Our students had a good time during the contest, and they came out feeling motivated to keep participating in similar competitions. The School of Engineering will also take part in the Ada Byron university programming competition, which will be held in Madrid in the spring of 2026.
