CUNEF Universidad focuses on the relevance of Red Teams in cybersecurity
4 February 2026
On 4 February, the School of Engineering organised a conference at Campus Pirineos on the importance of Red Teams in cybersecurity in companies and institutions. Damián Ruiz Soriano, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Singular Bank, explained to students that the role of Red Teams is to assess and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of protection, detection and response schemes by subjecting technological infrastructures to real attacks.
Ruiz Soriano stressed that cybercriminals operate systematically, in a process described by the cyber kill chain. In this sense, he pointed out that hackers spend time identifying security weaknesses to determine how to exploit them to shut down the companies and institutions under attack.
Singular Bank’s CISO also explained that, as opposed to Red Teams, Blue Teams test the technological infrastructures and processes used by customers, business units, and central services, as well as all the services provided to other companies.
Finally, Ruiz Soriano suggested that the future is the so-called AI-fication of cyber threats, which is the use of Artificial Intelligence to simplify attack processes. He noted that China has already staged the first large-scale AI cyberattack, planned and carried out in a matter of hours and without substantial human intervention. According to the speaker, we are already witnessing an industrialisation of cyber threats.
