CUNEF Universidad highlights the importance of mathematical education in business management
17 November 2025
On Monday, 17 November, the School of Business, Economics and Law organised “Why mathematics makes a difference in business management”, a complementary activity for undergraduate students with speakers Luis Vega González, mathematician and Researcher at the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics, Vicente Alciturri, physicist and Chair of Semicrol and the Cantabrian Association of Family Businesses, and Itciar Corral, mathematician and Product Manager at Enea AB. The session was chaired by Laureano González Vega, mathematician and Vice-Rector for Academic Planning and Quality Assurance at CUNEF Universidad.
Experience shows that strong skills in mathematics provide enormous professional flexibility, said Vega, who stressed the relevance of this discipline in social sciences degrees. During the session, the speakers ensured students that the result of mathematical training is a more analytical mindset, with the ability to look ahead and use logic to tackle potential issues. According to Corral, in an ever-changing business environment, knowing how to solve problems is essential, and mathematics trains professionals to identify patterns and solutions.
In this sense, Alciturri emphasised the importance of knowledge, insisting that students must make the most of their years at university to equip themselves with the necessary tools to succeed professionally. He also stressed the need to bridge the gap between mathematics and social sciences.
Finally, the speakers highlighted the importance of teaching mathematics in a way that students understand the actual use of what they are learning.
