CUNEF Universidad holds a session on science, health and economics

20 October 2025

On Monday, 20 October, the School of Business, Economics and Law organised a complementary activity on “How to deal with the next pandemic: scientific and political perspectives”. The speakers, Pampa García Molina, Bruno González Zorn and Santiago López García, emphasised the importance of science and truthful information on scientific advances.

For García Molina, Director of Science Media Centre Spain, the pandemic increased the population’s awareness of the relevance of science in citizens’ daily life. The journalist focused on the need for legitimate and accurate information sources, and asked CUNEF Universidad students not to disregard experts and intellectuals.

Santiago López García, Director of ECyT (Institute of Scientific and Technological Research at Universidad de Salamanca), pointed out that the winners of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences (Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt) have shown that economics and science are interconnected. For López, companies are not only thinking about short-term financial profit, but also looking to the future, as shown, for instance, in the investment in research on antibiotic resistance.

In this sense, Bruno González Zorn, Professor of Animal Health at UCM and WHO Expert, said that the antibiotic resistance pandemic is “silent”, but it is gradually causing more and more deaths. During the session, he insisted on the need for greater public incentives and public-private collaboration to promote research into drugs and their distribution, stating that “economics are the driving force” behind these efforts.
